How old do I have to be to receive a Learner’s Permit in Virginia?

In Virginia, you must be 15 years and 6 months old to be eligible for a Learner’s Permit.

How old do I have to be to receive a Driver’s License in Virginia?

You must be 16 years and 3 months old, and have had a Learner’s Permit for a minimum of 9 months before you are eligible to receive a Driver’s License.

If you’re over the age of 18, you have two options:

1)  you can take the road test at the DMV if you’ve had your Learner’s Permit for a minimum of 60 days.

2)  If you have completed a Driver’s Education course, you can waive the 60 day waiting period by completing 14 periods of Behind the Wheel with us. (7 periods of driving and 7 periods of observation*)

What is Behind the Wheel?

The behind-the-wheel course consists of 7 classes (1 class per day) of in-car instruction. The class must have at least 2 students and no more than 3 students per student driver vehicle. Each class is approximately 2 hours in the vehicle, 50 minutes of driving and 50 minutes of observation*.

The road skills test is given during the seventh instruction period. Upon successful completion of the course and the road test, students will have their temporary driver's license issued. If the student's eligibility date for use of the license is more than a month away, then the driving school hold the license until the eligibility date is closer.

Do I need driving experience for Behind the Wheel?

Students should be able to demonstrate proficiency in driving skills. The behind-the-wheel course does not include teaching you how to drive. Students should have experience on multiple types of roads and not just in neighborhoods or parking lots.

What if I don’t have driving experience?

If you enter Behind the Wheel with minimal or no skills and experience, then you should understand that the 6.5 hours of driving in this course may not be enough time for you to learn and perform the skills necessary to qualify for a driver's license. You can sign up for private lessons to gain more driving experience needed for Behind the Wheel.

How does the process work?

If under the age of 18, please have the following:

  • your Virginia learner's permit

  • your DEC-1, DTS 36 (driver education certificate), or DTS C (if the 36 fifty-minute periods of classroom instruction was completed)

  • a driving log with at least 30 hours completed

  • comfortable shoes that are safe for driving

Upon completion of your course, your instructor will provide the Final Road Test. If you pass the road test, your instructor will finalize the DMV documentation for your 180-day provisional driver's license.

I’m over the age of 18. Do I need Behind the Wheel?

Behind the Wheel is not required for individuals age 18 or older applying for a driver's license. Individuals age 18 and older can hold the learner's permit for a period of 60 days, then return to the DMV to take the Final Road Test. Road test applicants must complete the CSMA 19 form with a licensed driver and submit the form to the DMV when arriving to take the test.

For individuals who would like to get their driver's license before the 60-day holding period, we offer Adult Behind the Wheel which consists of 7 classes (1 class per day) of in-car instruction. The road skills test is given during the seventh instruction period. Upon successful completion of the course and the road test, you will receive an adult waiver that must be submitted to DMV to have your driver's license issued.
